How Do I Know If I Can Move Electrical In My Home?

Moving electrical fixtures in walls can be a complicated process, depending on the type of construction of your home. In this video, Brad from Home Love Construction provides useful information on how to determine if you can move electrical in your walls and what the implications of doing so may be.

First, you need to determine the type of construction of your home. You can do this by visiting your property appraiser’s website, which will state whether your home is made of concrete block or wood frame. If you have a concrete block home, you will not be able to move electrical fixtures on an outside wall without causing drywall damage. This means cutting out the drywall, moving the fixture, patching the drywall, and painting.

However, if you have a wood frame home, there is a cavity in the wall through which you can shove or pull a wire. If you are on an interior wall, you can access the attic and measure out where the wall is. You can then find the horizontal top of the wall and drill a hole down through it. If there are already wires going down, you can drill the hole next to them or in the same wall cavity. You can then cut out the hole where you want the switch in the wall and have your electrical fixture where you want it.

Brad also warns that if you are trying to go through the attic and get something down into an exterior wall of a wood frame home, it can be difficult to reach and drill the hole you need to get the wire down. The roof does this, so there will only be a limited amount of attic space at the outside wall.

In conclusion, moving electrical fixtures in walls can be a complex process, depending on the type of construction of your home. If you have a concrete block home, it will require cutting and patching drywall, whereas in a wood frame home, you can access the attic and drill a hole down through the wall.
